The beautiful island paradise of Curaçao, renowned as one of the most LGBTQ+ friendly destinations in the Caribbean, is celebrating a momentous achievement with the legalization of same-sex marriage.
This landmark victory comes after a determined and courageous effort initiated by members of the LGBTQ+ community, Human Rights Caribbean, FOKO, and Igualdat, dating back to the first Curacao Gay Conference in 1997, a time when the island was a rare safe haven for such discussions, supported by UNAIDS and personal donations. Diverse communities united, fostering inclusive networks in a paradise once shadowed by discrimination. Today, the dawn of a new chapter brings forth the promise of a brighter, more inclusive future.
Human Rights Caribbean (HRC) has played a pivotal role in this battle for equality. HRC President Janice Tjon Sien Kie expressed immense joy at the ruling, celebrating it as a historic win for the dignity and rights of LGBTQ+ individuals in Curacao and Aruba. The Supreme Court’s decision affirms the earlier ruling that the exclusion of same-sex couples from marriage is unjustifiable and discriminatory.
A Collective Effort
This triumph is the culmination of a four-year-long legal struggle, marked by the dedication and perseverance of many. HRC extends heartfelt gratitude to all those who contributed, especially the exceptional legal team of David Wever, Mirto Murray, and the cassation lawyers from NautaDutilh. Local partners such as Igualdat Kòrsou, Fundashon Orguyo Kòrsou, Kambrada, and Curaçao Pride have been instrumental in this collective effort.
A special commendation goes to the courageous lesbian couple who joined HRC in this legal battle. Their bravery paves the way for same-sex couples to finally exchange vows and have their love and commitment recognized legally. This ruling opens the door to a future where love and commitment between same-sex individuals are fully celebrated and acknowledged.
A Step Towards Universal Acceptance
It is essential to clarify that this ruling pertains to civil marriages and does not affect religious marriages. Civil marriage is a legal recognition of the union between two individuals, irrespective of gender, while religious institutions retain their autonomy in their matrimonial practices.
After a long and challenging legal battle, the verdict to legalize same-sex marriage in Curaçao comes as no surprise, given the numerous court battles that have been won on this subject in recent years. This milestone marks a significant step forward in the fight for equality and human rights on the island.
Curacao Pride 2024
The first same-sex marriage ceremony is already planned, symbolizing a new era of love and acceptance in Curaçao. This historic event coincides with the 12th annual Curaçao Pride, making this year’s celebrations extra special. From September 27 to October 6, the island will be vibrant with events, culminating in a grand parade on October 3.
Curaçao Pride 2024 promises to be an unforgettable celebration, embracing the theme of “Unity in Diversity.” With activities ranging from beach parties and cultural events to the highly anticipated parade, visitors and locals alike will come together to honor this tremendous milestone in the island’s history.
As always, Curaçao welcomes everyone to experience its warm hospitality, stunning landscapes, and rich cultural heritage. Join us in celebrating love, equality, and pride in one of the Caribbean’s most inclusive destinations.
